Ahr Valley

The Ahr region is considered to be Germany’s red wine paradise. It lies immediately north of the Mosel, and follows the Ahr river in the final stages of its journey towards its confluence with the mighty Rhine.

Though the Ahr Valley is one of Germany's northernmost wine regions, the area's general climate, however, is extraordinarily mild, thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream, which reaches the area unimpeded through the lowlands around Cologne.

The Romans knew about the climatic advantages of this wild romantic valley, so they planted the first vines there.

About 60% of the vineyards are planted with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), the "king of the red grapes", followed by Portugieser, Riesling and Frühburgunder. The classic Ahr Spätburgunder is brick red in colour and smells of red cherries, sweet spices, forest floor and possibly a hint of smoky bacon if barrel-aged.
